SM Krishna, 92, was unwell for quite some time, PTI quoted a family source as saying. “He breathed his last at 2:45 am at his residence," the source added.
Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli in Karnataka’s Mandya district, SM Krishna started his political career in 1962 by winning the Maddur Assembly seat as an Independent candidate. Later, he was associated with the Praja Socialist Party before joining the Congress.
In March 2017, he went on to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ended his roughly 50-year-long association with the Congress.
In January last year, he announced his retirement from active politics, citing age as the primary reason.
Krishna earlier served as the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka between October 11, 1999 and May 28, 2004. Besides this, he even served as the Governor of Maharashtra as well as the External Affairs Minister during the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government from 2009 to 2012.
Krishna is survived by his wife Prema and their two daughters.
