New Delhi: Days after a delegation of Muslim leaders met LG VK Saxena demanding the removal of Bangladeshi infiltrators, his office wrote to the chief secretary and police commissioner asking for the initiation of "strict action" based on the complaint. The LG secretariat asked them to launch a special two-month drive to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the capital and take action as per the extant rules in a time-bound manner.
The move comes in the wake of the representation made by the delegation of Ulemas and Muslim leaders from Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin and Basti Hazrat Nizamuddin to LG last Saturday, wherein they expressed deep concern about the attacks being undertaken on the Hindu and other minority communities in Bangladesh.
"Prominent Ulemas and Muslim residents have requested that illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators should neither be given houses on rent nor should they be given employment by any establishment. Further, they have requested that their children should not be given admission in any govt or private school," the principal secretary to LG stated in the letter.
"The Muslim leaders have also demanded the removal of illegal infiltrators from roads, footpaths, parks, and other govt lands, over which they have forcefully encroached, and any documents like Aadhar Card, Voter ID, or any other govt document acquired illegally by Bangladeshi infiltrators be cancelled immediately. They have also demanded that a special drive, like in the past, should be launched to identify the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Delhi and they should be sent back immediately," the letter from the LG secretariat read.
Considering the "gravity and seriousness" of the issue, LG desired that a weekly report in this regard be sent to the secretariat regularly.
The delegation of Ulemas and Muslim leaders expressed "deep concern" over the worsening state of affairs in Bangladesh. In a representation to LG, the delegation demanded stringent actions against illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators staying not just in Delhi but in the entire country.
Citing reports that there was a "spurt" in the number of illegal immigrants in the capital, LG also issued instructions to Delhi Police last month to remain "extra vigilant" and conduct a drive in coordination with central agencies to identify the infiltrators. The chief secretary was asked to direct field staff to exercise "extra vigil" in the verification of people applying for fake citizenship and election identity cards, and the civic agencies were told to prevent unauthorised occupation of roads, parks and footpaths.
