Salem: Unidentified people broke into a pawn shop at Theevattipatty here in the early hours of Monday and made away with gold ornaments weighing five sovereigns, six kilograms of silver ornaments and Rs25,000 in cash.
District superintendent of police Gautam Goyal said they had formed three special teams led by two deputy superintendents of police to nab the burglars.
According to police, the pawn shop - APR Jewellery - was run by G Karthik, 33, of Thalavaipatty. "He arrived at the shop around 10am on Monday and found gold and silver ornaments were missing. When he tried to check the CCTV footage, he found that burglars also had tampered with the CCTV cameras."
Karthik immediately alerted the Theevattipatty police, who visited the crime scene and initiated an investigation. "Burglars entered the shop by creating a hole in the back wall. Forensic experts have lifted fingerprints from the crime scene. While we pressed a sniffer dog into service, it couldn't find any lead," the SP said.
He pegged the value of stolen items at Rs10 lakh. "We have registered a case and further investigation is on."
