Panaji: Climate change is not a distant phenomenon, chief electrical engineer Stephen Fernandes told students at an Energy Conservation Week event on Tuesday.
“We experienced continuous rainfall for 40-45 days, and it’s a challenge to have any outdoor event,” he told the students. “These are consequences of our own actions. You are the future, and you can bring in change.”
Fernandes appealed to the students to embrace energy-efficient habits and spread the message to their families. He also appealed to industries and hotels to take steps towards energy conservation and to invest in green energy for a brighter future.
Power minister Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavlikar said Goa is dependent on thermal energy that uses coal for 72% of its power needs.
To spread the message of energy conservation among high school students, the electricity department organised a skit competition, poster painting, essay contest, street play, and drawing competition.
The award of excellence in energy conservation at the municipality and panchayat level was conferred to the CCP and Curti-Khandepar village panchayat, respectively.
