Varanasi: Following a court order, the Chetganj police lodged an FIR against four prominent doctors of the city and an ASHA worker. The case related to the death of a woman patient who allegedly underwent several surgeries on the recommendation of these doctors. Despite the fact that over Rs 14 lakh was spent on the surgeries of the woman, she could not be saved.
Chetganj inspector Dileep Kumar Shukla said that in compliance with the order of chief judicial magistrate, an FIR was lodged against Dr Swarnlata Singh of Chetganj, Dr Javed Iqbal of Ramakant Nagar, Dr Vidya Shankar Pandey of District Jail Road, Dr GD Gupta of Padaav, and ASHA worker Annu Devi of Hanuman Ghat.
According to complainant Bhanu Sahni of the Shivala area, his wife Suman Devi was suffering from menstrual-related issues. Annu came to their home and took Suman to Dr Swarnlata Singh for treatment. He said that Suman was admitted by Singh, who conducted uterus surgery costing around Rs 70,000. After being discharged, Suman started experiencing nausea and indigestion. When Sahni contacted Singh again, he said that she treated Suman for a day and then referred her to Dr Javed Iqbal.
Sahni further mentioned that Iqbal performed another surgery on Suman, costing around Rs 4 lakh. However, when Suman's condition worsened, Dr Iqbal referred her to Dr Vidya Sagar Pandey, who performed another surgery. Sahni mentioned this surgery cost Rs 5 lakhs. When her condition continued to deteriorate, Pandey referred her to Dr Gupta, where around Rs 50,000 was spent.
Despite all efforts, Suman died, said Sahni, mentioning that he tried to lodge a complaint with police and when the cops did not cooperate he sought the court's intervention.
