Dibrugarh: Asomiya Yuva Manch (AYM) has raised concerns over the rampant illegal rat-hole mining taking place in Tinsukia district.
In a press conference held in Tinsukia on Sunday, AYM alleged that illegal coal mining activities have been rampant in the Ledo-Margherita coal belt, specifically in areas such as Namdang, Tipom, Borgolai, Ledo, Paharpur and Jharna Basti in the Patkai Hills. The organisation claimed that nine coal miners have lost their lives since Sep 2022 in these dangerous operations.
"Despite the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banning rat-hole mining in 2014, the dangerous practice continues to thrive in the Ledo-Margherita coal belt. Over 700 illegal rat-hole mines are currently operating in the Patkai Hills with the support of muscle power, political connections and police backing," AYM leader Bitul Saikia said.
He added that illegal coal mining activities grew following the suspension of mining activities by Coal India Limited at several collieries in 2020.
"The surge in illegal mining intensified after Coal India Limited suspended operations at several collieries in June 2020, including Tikak, Tipong and Tirap, due to lack of statutory clearances. While Tikak colliery resumed operations in March 2022, the vacuum created by the suspension period allowed illegal operators to establish a strong foothold in the area. The coal mafia seized the opportunity to engage in rat-hole mining to meet the high demand for coal," Saikia said.
The AYM leader further alleged that the illegal trade thrives due to a deep-rooted nexus between coal mafia, politicians and law enforcement officials.
"It's a well-oiled multi-crore racket operating with impunity. Coal is transported across the country using fake permits, causing massive revenue losses to the state exchequer. We urge govt to take strong action against illegal rat-hole mining," he added.
