New Delhi: The prime suspect in the killing of businessman Sunil Jain in east Delhi was recently booked by Delhi Police under MCOCA and has faced multiple arrests by different police units in the last two years, sources said on Sunday.
The suspect is also learnt to have fired at businessmen's houses twice a few months ago from whom his handlers had demanded Rs 50 lakh each as "protection money".
It is unclear how he was at large despite such a record. Sunil Jain (56), of Krishna Nagar, was gunned down in Farsh Bazar in full public view on Saturday. Police suspect it was a case of "mistaken identity".
Sachin alias Golu, who also goes by the name of Mukesh, is being seen as the prime accused after he was caught on CCTV near the scene of crime.
On Sunday, TOI was the first to report about the possible involvement of Sachin. The second shooter is to be identified.
"Sachin has his roots in Seelampur and Harsh Vihar. His father was a house painter. The youngest of three brothers and sisters, he worked in a tyre shop and started to steal and sell mobile phones," said an investigator who had arrested him a few months ago. "A criminal from northeast Delhi named Sonu had introduced Sachin to jailed gangster Hashim Baba and his Dubai-based associate Rashid Cablewala in 2019. Since then, Sachin was working for them," he added.
In Jain's murder, Sachin was suspected to be on the lookout for a man named Virat, whose appearance and built and routine matched Jain's. This is why, police believe, Jain was killed.
Police haven't made any breakthrough yet and these are lines of probe, received from informers' inputs, they are working on.
Delhi Police commissioner Sanjay Arora has issued instructions to officers to curb the rising crime in Delhi. He has ordered the strengthening of the intelligence system. This move comes after a crucial meeting with senior officers at the police headquarters on Dec 7, where Arora issued several orders.
After the Jain's killing and a spate of snatchings in east Delhi, the commissioner also gave instructions to additional CP Sagar Singh Kalsi, who is looking after the charge of joint CP, to improve law and order.
