India’s D Gukesh took the lead at the 2024 World Chess Championship final in dramatic fashion as he beat reigning champion Ding Liren in the 11th round on Sunday in Singapore.
The win lifted Gukesh to 6.0 points, against Ding’s 5.0. If Gukesh holds onto this lead, he will become the youngest chess world champion.
How can Gukesh win the World Championship?
There are three rounds left in the 2024 World Chess Championship, starting with game 12 on Monday.

All Gukesh needs to do to secure the title is avoid defeats in the final three rounds. But, Ding will have the advantage of using white pieces in two of these rounds.

If Ding manages to win a game and match the points tally, the game will progress into a tiebreaker, which is scheduled for December 13.
If Gukesh reaches 7.5 points at any stage -- win one game and draw another -- the championship will end in his favour.
