Ludhiana: A wedding celebration in the city turned chaotic on Friday night when a 26-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound in an apparent misfire during a traditional Jago ceremony at Ishwar Colony, sparking a police investigation into the circumstances and the firearm involved.
Injured Balwinder Singh of Guru Angad Dev Colony has a bullet wound to his hand but is reported to be in stable condition, police have claimed. This carpenter told police that he had attended the wedding at a friend’s invitation. Witnesses said the shot had scared the guests before they regained composure and moved him to the civil hospital for treatment.
They alreted the Sadar police station, where the SHO, inspector Harshveer Singh, stated that preliminary findings had suggested the shooting to be accidental. "The injured has confirmed that it was not intentional," he said.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Harjinder Singh said a case would be registered for the misfire and teams were working to determine whether the firearm used was licensed or illegal. “If the weapon is licensed, we will revoke the license. If illegal, legal action will follow,” he said. Sources hinted at a possible argument between the victim and the suspected shooter during the function, which might have escalated. Police seek the suspect for questioning. Balwinder’s condition is not life-threatening, so his family is relieved.
