Jaisalmer: The national flag was unfurled on a 108-foot-high mast at Longewala battleground on Saturday as a tribute to the exceptional gallantry and valour of Indian soldiers during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The installation of the flag was accomplished through collaborative efforts of Army and Flag Foundation of India.
Army officials said the event was graced by war veterans Naik Jagdev Singh and Hav Mukhtiyar Singh who fought in the historic battle at Longewla 53 years ago. They were accompanied by eight other 1971 war veterans from Jaisalmer district. The gathering included members from Indian Air Force, Border Security Force, civil administration, distinguished personalities and the local community. The ceremony featured a cultural programme comprising patriotic renditions by school students.
The hallowed ground of Longewala commemorates the fierce battle fought here from Dec 5 to 7, 1971, where the courage of a few prevailed over the might of many. A war memorial at the battle site has become a prominent tourist destination.
