Ranchi: A 100-day tuberculosis (TB) elimination drive was launched in the state on Saturday. The campaign focuses on intensive tuberculosis investigation across four districts — Hazaribag, Ramgarh, Simdega and Gumla — aiming to identify new patients, reduce mortality rates, and ensure proper treatment.
Union minister of state for defence, Sanjay Seth, while launching the campaign at Ranchi sadar hospital, said, "Ensuring TB patients receive Nikshay nutrition support is our collective responsibility. Social organisations must actively participate in this initiative to eliminate TB from the country."
Dr Chhabi Joshi Pant, joint director at the ministry of health and family welfare, said that 347 districts across 33 states and union territories have been selected for this large-scale campaign. "A comprehensive micro plan has been developed, including Nikshay vehicles travelling through villages for screenings and awareness," she added.
Health department principal secretary Ajay Kumar Singh said the state's goal to eliminate TB by 2025, calling for grassroots-level involvement. "The state govt will provide full support and encourages citizens to motivate others to undergo testing," Singh said.
The state reported approximately 61,000 new TB cases in 2023, with projections indicating 65,000 cases in 2024. Notably, 38 panchayats have already achieved TB-free status, with a target of 500 panchayats by 2024 end.
State tuberculosis officer Dr Kamlesh Kumar said: "India identified 28.5 lakh TB patients in 2024, with Jharkhand reporting 56,000 cases in 2022. Our focus is on reducing cases through awareness."
To support the initiative, the minister flagged off a Nikshay vehicle equipped with X-ray facilities for Ramgarh district. This mobile unit will travel through communities, conducting screenings and raising awareness about TB prevention and treatment.
