Imphal: Lakhs of fingerlings were distributed to the flood-hit fish farmers of Manipur at the office complex of the directorate of fisheries at Lamphelpat on Saturday.
The initiative was undertaken by the state fisheries department in collaboration with the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneshwar as part of the ICAR-CIFA NEH outreach.
The director of fisheries, Heisnam Balkrisna Singh, along with the dept officials distributed ‘pengba' and ‘Indian major carp' fingerlings to 200 fish farmers of five valley districts — Imphal East & West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching.
Singh thanked PK Sahoo, director, ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneshwar and Subhendu Adhikari, principal scientist, ICAR-CIFA for providing assistance and support to the flood-affected fish farmers of Manipur for revival of their economic activities and enhancement of fish production
Manipur, especially Imphal valley, witnessed devastating floods twice this year. Thousands of acres of land and buildings were submerged in the floods.
