Ashwin into the attack. Six!! Full outside off, Head launches one down the ground and it clears the fence. Appeals for lbw from Ashwin, not given on field. Going down leg. 

Rana to Head, full and angling in, defended to the legside. On the pads again, clipped through midwicket for a couple. Another double, squarer on the legside this time. Full and wide, beats Head’s attempted slash outside off. 

Siraj for his seventh over today. Head punches to deep covers again to pocket a single. FOUR! Full and driven past mid off from Marnus. 

Harshit to Head, bowls a bouncer which Head, for a second, thinks of ramping but opts against it. A single on the third delivery to fine leg. A triple for Marnus as he leans in for a drive and gets it past covers. A single on the final delivery for Head, again to deep covers.

Siraj to Head, punches to deep covers for a single. Beaten! Another peach from Siraj outside off stump to Marnus. Just a single from the over.

Harshit into the attack now. Marnus on strike. FOUR! Slightly fuller and Marnus flicks it through mid wicket. FOUR more! On the pads and Marnus packs it through square leg.

Siraj to Head, beaten! On the off stump line, Head expects it to angle in but it straightens. Had it been slightly fuller it would have taken the top of off. Head slashes wide but misses. A maiden over from Siraj.

SMITH IS STRANGLED DOWN LEG! Bumrah has his third wicket. He looks to flick this delivery on the middle-stump line, ends up nicking it to the keeper.

Travis Head is the new batter. Bumrah comes around the wicket for him. Beaten! Outside the off stump and leaves the left hander. FOUR! Too full and Head drives it through covers. He flicks the final delivery to deep fine leg for a single.

Siraj again. The first delivery is on a good length, at the off-and-middle line, Marnus defends. Siraj goes slightly short and into the body, Marnus tucks it away for a single to the square leg region. Sharp bounce on the third, takes the shoulder of the bat and goes to backward point, a single taken. He returns to the off stump line and targets the stumps, forcing Marnus to defend. FOUR runs, too full and Marnus on drives. The ball slows down before hitting the fence but the pair runs four nonetheless.

Bumrah to Smith. He is getting the ball to seam in from outside the off stump, Smith thorough in his defence. Another no ball from India. That’s the only run from the over.

Siraj starts with a no ball. Marnus blocks the first two deliveries. Siraj is slightly fuller today than he was on Day 1. That’s forcing Marnus to not shoulder arms. An edge on the final delivery but it dies down as it goes to the gully fielder.

Australia saw the light on a Friday night. At a packed Adelaide Oval and on a rather unusual day in which the expected rains stayed away while the floodlights malfunctioned twice, the host scored 86 for one in reply to India’s first innings score of 180.

The second Test’s opening day was a tale of two parts. The first revealed a vulnerable Indian stint and the second highlighted Australia’s desire to fight back in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, in which the host trails by 0-1. 

Australian openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney survived the first 10 overs before Jasprit Bumrah caused the initial breach. Khawaja redirected a Bumrah special to Rohit Sharma at first slip. A twitchy Marnus Labuschagne then survived an inquisition from Bumrah before finding his voice.

McSweeney too freed his earlier dour arms and that found an echo through Labuschagne’s bat as the 62-run unbeaten second-wicket partnership took shape. Pat Cummins and his men would perhaps believe that they are marginally ahead even if they still have a 94-run deficit to clear.
