Agartala: The All Tripura Government Doctors' Association (ATGDA) voiced their discontent on Saturday after a local court in Unokoti district provided bail to three accused, including a ruling BJP Zilla Parishad member, who were arrested for allegedly attacking an on-duty doctor at the district hospital.
The medical professionals warned of initiating statewide protests demanding workplace security. The Prevention of Violence Against Healthcare Professionals and Clinical Establishments Act, 2022 stipulates that such offences shall be treated as cognizable and non-bailable.
The authorities, however, did not invoke this Act but arrested the accused under various non-bailable sections of Bharatiya Naya Sanghita. According to police sources, the arrests included Zilla Parishad member Shyamal Das, along with Sandip Das and Ranjit Das, following an FIR.
Reports indicate that the three individuals had allegedly attacked Dr Droupad Das while he was attending to a road accident victim. Led by Shyamal Das, the accused had entered the hospital's emergency unit late on Thursday night.
According to the doctor's statement, Ranjit had sustained head injuries, and the group was directed to the dressing room. However, they became aggressive towards the doctor, reportedly slapping him in the presence of police personnel. When officers attempted to intervene, they too faced misconduct, as evidenced by the hospital's CCTV footage.
