New Delhi: A registered SIM card vendor was arrested for his alleged involvement in illegally supplying SIM cards to cyber fraudsters operating from China, Cambodia, and other South Asian countries.
The police received a complaint from a representative of a private firm, who alleged that he was defrauded of Rs 20 lakhs by an imposter claiming to be a director of his company. The scammer contacted the representative via WhatsApp, introduced himself as one of the directors of the firm, and subsequently duped him out of the money.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ravi Kumar Singh formed a team under Additional DCP Aishwarya Sharma, and they arrested one Anuj Kumar (29) from Gaya in Bihar. A total of 5,000 illegal SIM cards and 25 mobile phones were recovered during the operation. So far, 250 SIM cards were found to be active.
The accused claimed to be the mastermind of a gang and a registered SIM vendor. "He exploited Gaya's status as a major tourist hub for South Asian travellers to orchestrate his operations," police said.
