New Delhi: A delegation of prominent Ulemas and Muslim residents of the city from Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin and Basti Hazrat Nizamuddin met lieutenant governor VK Saxena on Saturday and urged that Bangladeshi infiltrators living in the capital be identified and sent back, Raj Niwas said in a statement.
It added that the delegation expressed "deep concern" over alleged atrocities faced by Hindu and other minority communities in Bangladesh and the worsening state-of-affairs in the country.
In a representation to LG, the delegation demanded stringent actions against illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators staying not just in Delhi but in the entire country, and said they should not be provided rented accommodation or jobs in any establishment.
It also said that Delhi Police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi should be directed to remove any encroachments on govt land, footpaths, parks and other public places by such people. Any official documents like Aadhaar cards or voter ID cards, if issued to them, should be immediately cancelled, the letter read.
Further, it said that any religious place sheltering them should also evict them. A special drive should be launched to identify such "infiltrators" and send them back to Bangladesh, the delegation said.
"A special drive should be launched to identify such infiltrators and they will be sent back to Bangladesh," Raj Niwas quoted the delegation saying in its representation.
Citing reports that there was a "sudden spurt" in the number of illegal immigrants in the capital, the LG had also issued instructions to Delhi police last month to remain "extra vigilant" and conduct a drive in coordination with central agencies to identify the infiltrators. The chief secretary was asked to direct field staff to exercise "extra vigil" in verification of people applying for fake citizenship and election identity cards, the civic agencies were told to prevent unauthorised occupation of roads, parks and footpaths.
