Coimbatore: A group of commuters blocked the road in front of Singanallur bus stand in the early hours of Thursday, urging the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) to operate more buses to the southern districts.
TNSTC operates mofussil buses to Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts from the Singanallur bus terminal round the clock. During the festival and ‘muhurtham' seasons, the bus terminal witnesses huge crowds, to clear which TNSTC often runs special buses.
In view of ‘muhurtham' day on Thursday, several hundreds of people had flocked to the Singanallur bus terminal on Wednesday night to travel to their hometowns to attend various events. While many passengers arrived at the bus terminal around 9pm, there were no buses to the southern districts until 1am on Thursday.
In a fit of rage, the passengers staged a road roko in front of the bus terminal around 3am. Singanallur police inspector Elango and team held talks with the protestors. TNSTC officials also reached the bus terminal and arranged more buses to the southern districts. Later, the commuters withdrew their protest.
