Mangaluru: Officials of the Cyber Economic & Narcotics Crime (CEN) station succeeded in solving a cybercrime case involving the hacking of a Flipkart account by sending an APK file on WhatsApp and purchasing valuables worth Rs 1.3 lakh. The police team arrested Gaurav Makwana, 25, son of Ghanshyam Makwana, a resident of South Delhi, in connection with the case.
Commissioner of police Anupam Agrawal stated that in a complaint to the CEN station, Yadunandan, 27, alleged that he received an APK file named vahan.parivahan.apk on his WhatsApp. Upon downloading the file, the complainant's Flipkart account was hacked. Cyber fraudsters used the hacked Flipkart account to purchase two mobile phones, a pair of AirPods, and gift vouchers worth Rs 1,31,000 using his debit and credit cards. A case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station under Sections 66C, 66D of the IT Act, and Section 318(4) of the BNS, Agrawal said.
During the investigation, information was gathered from Flipkart, and within 48 hours, PSI Gurappa Kanthi and police constable Thippa Reddy from the CEN station went to Delhi and arrested Gaurav Makwana. They recovered valuables including two Android phones, five iPhone 15s, two pairs of AirPods, and the mobile phone used for the crime. The total value of the seized property is Rs 4 lakh. The court remanded the accused to judicial custody, he said, adding that efforts are ongoing to trace other suspects involved in the case.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of police commissioner Agrawal, DCP (law and order) Siddharth Goyal, DCP (crime and traffic) K Ravi Shankar, and ACP Ravish Nayak.
