We’re in the midst of an AI revolution: from smart devices and facial recognition at airports to using ChatGPT for writing emails and travel itineraries, new technologies are transforming how we navigate our daily lives.
Technology has long influenced language learning, and Duolingo has been leveraging it to make learning more accessible for over 12 years! In light of these technological advancements, Duolingo partnered with YouGov to reveal language learning trends associated with AI in India.
This study revealed that 71% of Indians expressed excitement about using emerging technology such as AI-based personal tutors, chatbots, AI-driven conversation partners, and VR/AR immersive technologies for language learning. Further, 63% anticipate that increased use of AI, machine learning, and immersive learning through VR/AR will shape personalized education in the coming years.
The reasons people learn a language are many. However, the YouGov report unveiled that 55% of Indians learn a new language for personal, and professional growth, and career advancement. Other reasons why Indians learn a language include travel and cultural exploration (45%), social interactions in global communities (42%), and entertainment (movies, music, games) (40%).
India’s linguistic diversity is reflected in everyday conversations, with 46% of Indians frequently code-switching—shifting between languages mid-sentence. However, maintaining fluency across multiple languages can be challenging. Many Indians (55%) report difficulties such as finding time to practice regularly and often confusing words or grammar between languages while trying to be proficient in languages.
Karandeep Singh Kapany, Regional Marketing Director, Duolingo, said, “Language learning is evolving rapidly, driven by emerging technologies that help learners connect with the world and its diverse cultures. In a multilingual country like India, where personal growth and cultural exploration are key priorities, technology enables personalized and engaging learning experiences.
“At Duolingo, we are inspired by this vibrant spirit, dedicated to making education accessible, and focused on tailoring it to meet every individual’s needs. This year’s Duolingo Language Report reflects this journey and celebrates the diverse motivations that fuel our learners’ passion,” Kapany said.
