Chatra: Two women were arrested on charges of murdering their 62-year-old mother-in-law, Bhikhani Devi, at Baghmundi village in Chatra district.
The accused — Babita Devi (35) and Sangeeta Devi (32) — were held from their residence following a tip-off, said Itkhori police station officer-in-charge Abhishek Singh.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Bhikhani Devi went to inspect cultivation work in her field. According to villagers, the accused allegedly assaulted the elderly woman, by repeatedly kicking her in the chest, which resulted in her death. The victim's son, Nageshwar Dangi, rushed his mother to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Following the incident, Nageshwar filed an FIR against his sisters-in-law at the Itkhori police station.
Sources said that the accused had a strained relationship with their mother-in-law, leading to frequent conflicts. On the day of the incident, an argument erupted when Bhikhani visited the field. The situation escalated when the duo allegedly pushed her to the ground and assaulted her, causing severe internal injuries that proved fatal.
"We have gathered substantial evidence against the accused, including statements from local villagers," said Singh. "However, we are awaiting the post-mortem report for conclusive evidence." The accused were reportedly hiding in their house after the incident before being arrested.
