Udupi: Deputy commissioner Vidya Kumari K directed officials to take all necessary measures to establish a multi-purpose cooperative society for labour services in the district to benefit workers. She was speaking while presiding over a meeting organised to discuss the establishment of a new multi-purpose cooperative society for labour services in the district, at the deputy commissioner office in Manipal.
The establishment of this society will facilitate workers, contractors, and others to avail various economic benefits, along with providing services to outsourced employees working under various govt departments, corporations, and institutions. She said that by providing statutory benefits like salary payment, ESI, and PF to outsourced employees, operations can be carried out smoothly, without any issues.
Such societies have already been established in many districts across the state, successfully deploying outsourced employees to various departments and providing them with statutory services, including salary, without any complications. This should also be implemented in this district, she stated.
She said that preparations, including setting up an office, drafting bylaws, and forming a preliminary committee, should be completed soon to establish the society. She also suggested that the district team should visit and gather information from existing multi-purpose cooperative societies for labour services.
She noted that over 2,080 people are working on an outsourced basis in various departments in the district, and several contract agencies have often complained about not receiving proper salaries, PF, and other legal benefits. Establishing such multi-purpose societies can resolve many of these issues, she said.
A meeting will be convened on Dec 12 with outsourced staff working in various govt departments, corporation boards, and institutions in the district to discuss the pros and cons of starting the multi-purpose cooperative society, she added.
