Thiruvananthapuram: An environment-friendly road construction method known as full depth reclamation (FDR) was launched on Killi-EMS Academy road in Kattakada on Wednesday. This innovative technique, which involves resurfacing and reconstructing roads using existing materials, marks a significant step in sustainable infrastructure development in Kerala.
The project, funded by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) with an allocation of Rs 24.45 crore. The contract for constructing this 7.6-km road and four others in Thiruvananthapuram district was awarded to Telangana-based Vishwasamudra Engineering. FDR technology minimizes environmental exploitation by reusing the loosened road surface, mixing it with cement and stabilizers and topping it with a bitumen concrete layer. This method not only reduces the need for new construction materials but also speeds up completion, lowers costs and decreases maintenance needs.
The trial for Killi-EMS Academy road renovation began on Dec 3 in the presence of Kattakada MLA IB Satheesh, along with officials from KIIFB and the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB).
Speaking at the event, Satheesh emphasized the importance of this sustainable approach in balancing road development and environmental protection. "We are committed to completing the project within a short period, and the systems are being closely monitored to ensure timely completion," he said.
