Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma advocated for population growth in the state during the Zofest, citing low population density. He hinted at incentives for larger families, aligning with government policy. The festival, organized by MZP, celebrated Zo ethnic unity across regions and internationally, featuring cultural programs and discussions on integration.
AIZAWL: Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Wednesday emphasised the need for population growth in the state, citing its sparse population density as a pressing concern.
"Zofate (the broader term for ethnic Mizo tribes) need to grow in numbers. Compared to other states, Mizoram's population density remains sparse. We have enough land to accommodate more people," the chief minister said, addressing the second day of Zofest at Lalbuanga Hall, West Phaileng bordering Bangladesh in Mamit district.
Lalduhoma said promoting population growth aligns with his govt's policy, hinting at plans to incentivise families with more than three children.
Organised by Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), apex student body of the state, Zofest aims to strengthen unity among Zofate across the region.
The chief minister lauded the increasing unity among Zo descendants within Mizoram and globally. He highlighted significant events like the formation of the Mizoram Council of Churches and efforts to unify nine Zo community churches in the United States.
"Under my chairmanship, several meetings have been held to foster unity among Zo ethnic tribes in Chin Hills," he said, underscoring the state govt's efforts in promoting unity within Mizoram and beyond.
The chief minister also praised the MZP's enduring role in advocating for the unification of Zo ethnic groups.
MZP president Lalthianghlima emphasised on the importance of the festival in fostering unity among Zo communities across Manipur, Assam, Tripura and beyond. "The participation of Zo descendants from across regions continues to strengthen our bond, and we look forward to building on this spirit of unity," he said.
Cultural programmes and festivities drawing participants from Mizoram, neighbouring states and countries and delegates from the United States marked the 10th edition of Zofest. Based on the theme "hrui khat vuanin" (marching together as one), the three-day programme showcased the cultural richness and solidarity of Zofate, furthering the MZP's vision of integration and cooperation among the ethnic groups.
