Chennai: Following the arrest of two city policemen in connection with drug smuggling, the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) has detained another policeman from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for questioning over the trafficking of methamphetamine in the city. Earlier, another policeman attached to NCB had also been detained for inquiry.
The ANIU had previously arrested James (35) of the T. Nagar Deputy Commissioner's office and R. Barani (32) of the Ayanavaram police station for their alleged involvement in smuggling activities. Investigators suspect that two NCB policemen, who have been detained, colluded with drug smuggling gangs, providing them with information about upcoming raids.
"Based on our probe, the NCB officers are believed to have tipped off smugglers about raids in exchange for high-value drugs. These drugs were then passed on to small-time peddlers in the city, enabling them to make quick money. We are still in the process of gathering necessary documents to proceed with arrests," the officer added.
The investigation is reportedly based on information obtained from arrested drug smuggler Surendranath and others connected to the case.
