Dibrugarh: Police on Tuesday arrested a person from Kakopathar in Tinsukia for attempting to extort money from a local businessman, claiming connections with the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom — Independent (Ulfa-I), reports Rajib Dutta.
The accused, Mintu Moran, was apprehended after he allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from a businessman at Pengeri. According to police, Moran and his accomplice attempted to deceive the victim by claiming that they required money for medical treatment of an ailing Ulfa-I member.
Moran was arrested after the businessman reported an extortion attempt to the police. His accomplice, Surajit Moran, has been absconding.
