Ahmedabad: A local court on Tuesday sent a 48-year-old man who had crashed his SUV into a scooter on Naroda-Dehgam Road on Sunday night to three-day police remand. Two riders were killed in the accident. The accused, Mitesh Patel, who was allegedly drunk when the accident occurred, was produced in the rural court on Monday.
While Kanbha police sought a seven-day remand of the accused, Ahmedabad rural court Judge H R Patel granted the cops a three-day remand.
Meanwhile, police will inspect the site and reconstruct the accident as part of the investigation. Public Prosecutor Sandeep Gautam argued that the accused had been in an inebriated state when he crashed the car into the scooterists. Therefore, he needs to be taken to the spot for investigation and footage from CCTV cams on the route he travelled need to be procured. A comprehensive probe was required to ascertain if the accused was driving under the influence of any substance other than alcohol.
It also needed to be investigated if he caused any other accidents along his route, police submitted. Since the accused was injured in the accident, he was taken to Civil Hospital for treatment.
Advocate Jagat Patel, representing the accused, argued that since police obtained his blood sample, any substance he may have consumed will be detected. The presence of the accused was not necessary to recover CCTV footage. Besides, it was not a hit and run case and the accused had been arrested from the accident spot. Therefore, his presence is not required for the remand reasons raised by police. After hearing the parties, the judge granted cops a three-day remand of Mitesh Patel.
