Kolkata: The brass at Lalbazar has asked all police stations to carry out three major anti-sabotage drills daily to check crimes and ensure that foreign nationals cannot settle in Kolkata localities. The drills include a detailed check on hotels, guest houses and even PG accommodations. The cops have been asked to set up surprise nakas and collect details on new inhabitants settling in localities.
The orders come days after a Bangladeshi national was arrested for illegally settling in India by procuring fake Indian documents. Sources said checks were intensified in the past 48 hours, with reports of police going for door-to-door checks in the Dompara area of Girish Park and two colonies located at the Panchasayar-Garia border.
Cops now claim that the accused, Salim Matabbar, arrested from a hotel on Marquis Street, provided shelter to 15 Bangladeshis who entered India unlawfully.
According to sources at Lalbazar, hotels accommodating foreigners must verify their passports and check if they have expired. If a foreigner's passport seems suspicious, the person must be reported. The documents of other residents in the hotel must also be verified. Officers from the police stations will carry out this task regularly. They will conduct visits to the hotels in their respective areas. If any suspicion arises, it must be reported to the control room immediately.
