Mangaluru: The Mangaluru airport IMD observatory (Bajpe) witnessed a historic downpour with 156 mm of rainfall on Tuesday, setting a new record for the highest single-day rainfall in December. This surpasses the previous record of 142.6 mm, set on December 10, 1965.
According to IMD officials, it is a record for the highest rainfall in 24 hours for the month of Dec. The 156 mm rainfall recorded on Monday is the highest single-day rainfall at the station for Dec.
An IMD official maintained that the coastal areas typically do not experience such intense rainfall during the northeast monsoon. According to the official, the IMD observatory at Bajpe recorded only 7.2 mm of rainfall by 5.30 am on Monday. However, by 8.30 pm, the observatory recorded 88.4 mm, indicating that 81 mm of rain fell within just three hours. This level of extremely heavy rainfall was deemed unprecedented for the region, the official noted.
Neere records highest rain in state
In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday to 8.30 am on Tuesday, Neere village near Karkala in Udupi district recorded the state's maximum rainfall of 261.5 mm. Meanwhile, Hejmadi in Udupi stood in second place by recording 239 mm of rainfall, and Bala of Mangaluru in third place with 234.5 mm of rain during the period.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning with light to moderate rain very likely to occur in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district on Wednesday. Since squally weather with wind speeds of 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, is likely to prevail along the Karnataka coast, fishermen are advised not to embark on deep-sea fishing expeditions.
