Patna: After functioning without a regular full-time teacher for the last six years, the 68-year-old Bengali department of Patna University (PU) has received a new lease of life with the appointment of three new assistant professors.
Chandan Barik, Riya Chatterjee and Kalpana Khan joined the Bengali department on Monday.
After the retirement of the lone subject teacher and the last head of the department in August 2018, it was being headed by the head of some other postgraduate department. Whatever few students joined the department were taught by guest faculties.
Expressing her pleasure over the appointment of regular teachers in the "dormant" department, its last head, Pratima Sarkar, told the newspaper that now regular teaching and research could be conducted with the help of these teachers, appointed on the recommendation of Bihar State University Service Commission.
She said that the postgraduate department of Bengali, established in 1956, started functioning under Satyendra Nath Ghoshal, who came from Visva Bharati. More than 70 doctorate degrees have been given to researchers so far in this department, which used to attract students not only from different neighbouring states, but even from Bangladesh, she said.
"Bengali used to be taught in undergraduate classes at Patna Women's College, Magadh Mahila College, BN College and Patna College, but it discontinued mainly due to lack of teachers. There were at least 11 sanctioned posts of teachers in Bengali in PU and its colleges, but no appointment was made against the vacant posts, leading to the suspension of teaching," she said.
