Patna: Three people of a family, including a 75-year-old woman, sustained severe burns in an electric transformer explosion at Baghpur village in Punpun subdivision of Patna district on Monday.
The incident comes barely nine months after a similar explosion on the Patna civil court campus claimed four lives, including a 60-year-old notary advocate.
On Monday around 8.45am, Yashoda Devi (75) was returning home with her daughter Sarita Devi (45) and granddaughter Amrita Kumari (10) from a nearby market in the limits of Parsa Bazaar police station when the transformer exploded and caught fire.
According to police, as they were passing by, the overhead transformer exploded, and a ball of fire and oil fell on them.
Passers-by rushed them to the local primary health centre, from where the doctors referred them to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH). Upon receiving information about the incident, the police reached the spot, and called a fire tender to extinguish the flames.
Confirming the incident, Maneka Rani, Parsa Bazaar station house officer, said Yashoda and her daughter Sarita suffered more than 90% burn injuries and are admitted to the intensive care unit of the PMCH. According to doctors, their condition is said to be critical, she added.
"They suffered burn injuries as the hot liquid from the transformer spilled on them. The police are further investigating the incident," the SHO told this newspaper.
In a similar fire triggered by an explosion in a transformer at Patna civil court on March 13, the 60-year-old notary advocate, who was a person with disabilities, died on the spot, while three more people succumbed to their burns subsequently during treatment.
