Bokaro: The Tenughat-Bokaro canal water supply has been suspended since Sunday for repair work at 105 locations at a cost of Rs 4.70 crore. The water supply is expected to be restored by December 6, executive engineer Ranjit Kujur of the Tenughat dam division said.
The 34-km canal provides 150 to 200 cusecs of water to Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) and its township, supporting over 5 lakh residents.
BSL and Chas are unlikely to face water shortages during maintenance period as BSL cooling ponds have 217.94mt water reserve. Though the level is expected to drop to 217.06mt, it will remain within operational parameters. However, rural communities dependent on the canal for their water requirements may experience temporary disruptions, particularly those relying on canal-based water supply schemes.
BSL spokesperson Manikant Dhan said despite the closure of canal, water supply to the township and plant will continue normally. However, it may result in slightly reduced production levels during this period.
