Hyderabad: Pregnancy-related exigencies constituted the largest portion of emergencies (20%) attended to by 108 vehicles in the state in the past one year. Data from Nov 2023 till Oct this year shows that at 13%, the second most number of emergencies fell in the vehicular trauma category.
Overall, 108 ambulances attended to 7.7 lakh emergency cases in the said period. Apart from pregnancy and vehicular trauma (road accident cases), acute abdominal pain, non-vehicular trauma cases (such as falls, burns, stabbing), as well as fever and infection cases were among the top five emergencies that cropped up during the year, with an average of 54,000 emergencies per month.
Two-wheeler riders vulnerable
Around 7,000 road trauma injuries were reported on an average per month with Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad, and Medchal-Malkajgiri on top of the list of districts for accidents.
The majority of the cases involved two-wheeler riders (about 85%), say officials. Also, 53% of road accident emergencies attended to were from rural areas, followed by 39% in urban areas and 8% in tribal areas.
"The majority of the emergency calls we get are from rural and tribal areas since people there are completely dependent on us for road accident, pregnancy, or other emergencies. A chunk of the accident injury cases in urban areas might be going to nearby hospitals," said LA Khalid, chief operating officer, Telangana EMRI Green Health Services.
Sunday the worst
Going by trauma emergency statistics, Sunday seems to be the worst day of the week in terms of accidents. On Sundays, 16.5% of injuries were recorded, followed by Thursday, with 14.6% road accident injuries.
As per the data, number of road accidents start increasing post-lunch hours, peaking between 6 pm to 9 pm. Accidents continue to be high till midnight. "Emergencies in urban areas are attended to within 12 minutes, while attending to emergencies in rural and tribal areas takes 15-18 minutes," said Khalid.
