Jhansi: The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a subsidiary of the World Bank Group, certified the Jhansi district library with EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) net zero carbon ready certification with 100% energy saving due to the proper utilisation of energy efficiency measures and on-site renewable energy. The certificate acknowledges it as the pioneering project in Asia to achieve 100% energy savings using on-site renewable energy.
The certificate was issued on Friday by the IFC under its India green building programme following an audit conducted recently. EDGE certification facilitates global sustainability objectives, including those specified in the Paris Agreemens.
The state-of-the-art library building was constructed within ninety days, replacing the previous library that existed for half a century. The refurbished library building was inaugurated by CM Yogi Adityanath in August 2023.
The building's energy consumption will be 30 MWh against the usual 150 MWh annually, generated entirely from renewable solar and wind energy via solar PV panels and a wind turbine, said the construction firm MD.
The building features specially designed ventilation ensuring natural light and air throughout the day. Provisions include hot and cold water circulation through a network of polymer pipes concealed within the floor, maintaining cool temperatures in summer's and warmth during winters. Additionally, the library achieves a 29% reduction in water usage through rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems promoting sustainable water management. The building reduces its material carbon footprint by 34% through locally sourced and sustainable materials, substantially minimising embodied carbon.
Vice-chairman of Jhansi Development Authority Alok Yadav said, "By meeting EDGE certification benchmarks for energy, water, and material efficiency, the library stands as a lighthouse project, driving India's vision for a sustainable future. Aligned with PM Narendra Modi's Net-Zero 2070 vision, and under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath's initiative that reflects India's commitment to decarbonisation."
