Guwahati: A severed head was found entangled in a fisherman's net in Dhakuakhana, presumably belonging to the partially burnt headless body, recovered on June 1, police said.
The head was discovered beneath the PWD bridge, spanning the Singia water body, on Sunday. A CID team arrived at the location and dispatched the recovered severed head, found in a sack, for forensic examination. The case was transferred to the CID for an "expeditious and thorough" investigation after the district police were unsuccessful in solving the murder mystery for 28 days.
A partially burnt headless body was discovered by the police at a Sumoni (Muga silk host plantation), approximately 200 metres from the residence of BJP worker and Jal Jeevan Mission contractor Sunil Gogoi, in Sapotia Chetiagaon under Dhakuakhana police station jurisdiction.
Initially, the discovered body was presumed to be Gogoi's, as he had been missing since June 30. Police registered a case based on his wife Puspa's FIR and commenced investigation. However, DNA analysis revealed that the body belonged to Jahangir Hussain from Dhubri. Hussain resided at Sunil's residence on May 29 and vanished the following day. Subsequently, police declared Sunil an absconder. According to the police, Sunil remains at large.
The discovery of the severed head six months after the murder is considered a significant lead in the case.
"The CID has been investigating for almost six months, yet no clues have been found so far. Now, a head has been recovered in a stone-filled bag caught in a fisherman's net at the Singiya reservoir, 2 km from Sunil's house. We have demanded that a DNA test be conducted quickly to confirm whether it is Jahangir's head," Jahangir's brother Jahidul said.
