Hyderabad: The family of a 70-year-old man from Warangal complained to the Telangana Medical Council after he suffered a severe skin condition following treatment by an unqualified practitioner. The man's skin started peeling off after taking medicine.
As per the complaint, Itaneni Surayya, a resident of Fort Warangal, sought treatment from G Ramakrishna for fever on Nov 25. "Ramakrishna examined him and gave some medicines from his medical shop next door, and the very next day, white patches appeared on the patient's skin. The white patches had a burning sensation, and within 24 hours, he had blisters on his back and other parts of the body. The skin started peeling off. When he went back to the RMP, he was asked to consult a dermatologist," said Dr Naresh Kumar of TGMC.
The dermatologist who examined him admitted him to Sankaram Hospital on Nov 27, in view of the severity of the condition. "The medical team there confirmed that the blisters on his skin developed due to the reaction of the medicines given by the RMP. The treatment cost reached Rs 50,000 by that time, and that's when Surayya's grandson B Vamsi Krishna submitted a petition to us," added Dr Kumar.
The family sought action against the unqualified RMP, following which an investigation was launched. "Several cases of severe adverse effects of treatment given by unqualified people are coming to light now. With awareness about the medical council, several families are directly approaching us when something goes wrong. We urge the general public not to seek treatment from RMPs/PMPs. RMP/PMPs are not real doctors, and they should not write prescriptions, give injections, administer saline, or conduct lab tests. A series of complaints have been filed to the council from Fort Warangal, Shivnagar, and Karimabad areas," said Dr Sheshu Madhav from TGMC.
