Namakkal: Three people, including two women died after they were hit by an Omni van early on Sunday morning. The incident took place when they were out for a morning walk.
The deceased have been identified as K Malaiannan, 70, his wife Nirmala, 55, and their neighbor S Sellammal, 65, all residents of Rasipalayam near Mohanur. Police said they were on their morning walk when the accident took place.
Around 5am on Sunday, they were knocked down by a van when they were walking along the Mohanur-Namakkal state highway. "They succumbed to severe injuries on the spot," said a police officer from the Mohanur police station. The van driver, identified as P Manikandan, 30, also suffered injuries.
Police took the injured driver to a private hospital in Namakkal town for treatment and shifted the bodies to the Namakkal Government Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident was caused due to low visibility caused by fog. "The van driver could not see the three because of the fog," the officer added.
Meanwhile, Dr P V Senthil, spokesman, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee called on the state government to provide compensation to the families of the deceased. He also urged pedestrians to stay indoors until visibility improves or at least until after sunrise to prevent similar incidents.
A case has been registered against the driver and further investigations are on.
