Patna: More than 10,000 people participated in the ‘Patna Marathon-2024' on Sunday. The event, themed ‘Run for De-addicted Bihar', was organised by the prohibition, excise and registration department in collaboration with the State Bank of India to promote awareness against addiction.
In the elite men's category, Niguse Kebede Gurmussa claimed first place, Adugna Tsegaye secured second and Harendra Chauhan came in third. The elite women's 21km race saw Anjali Kumari taking first place, followed by Santoshi Shrestha from Nepal second and Jerusalem third. In the 42km elite women's category, Ethiopia dominated with Senait Kefelgn Lesharge securing first, Genet Shikur Rashid second and Bisle Guye third positions.
The marathon began with an energetic performance by DJ Olie, boosting the enthusiasm of participants. The event was flagged off by dignitaries including prohibition minister Ratnesh Sada, department secretary Binod Singh Gunjiyal, commissioner Ravish Kumar Singh and badminton player Saina Nehwal.
"Participants in the marathon were flagged off at 5am from gate number 1 of Gandhi Maidan. It went through J P Ganga Path, continued to Atal Path and returned to the starting point.
Elaborate arrangements were made for the event, including security, traffic management and medical facilities. Ambulances and cardiologists were stationed along the route while emergency facilities at PMCH, AIIMS and other hospitals were prepared to handle any situation.
The 10km women's race was led by Tamsi Singh in first place, followed by Munni Devi and Rebi Paul. In the men's 10km race, Shubham Balyan claimed first, Pankaj Kumar second and Prince Raj Mishra third.
Sashastra Seema Bal's participation was noteworthy with 45 members taking part. SSB inspector general Nayyar Hasnain Khan urged the people of Bihar to embrace a drug-free lifestyle. "A drug-free society not only improves individual life but also lays the foundation for a strong nation," Khan said. DIG H Bhajan Singh also played a pivotal role, guiding the SSB participants who demonstrated dedication and discipline.
