Coimbatore: The Singanallur police on Saturday arrested a 47-year-old man for murdering a youth at Irugur in the city by dropping a boulder on his head the previous night.
A police officer identified the arrested person as M Madan, an electrician from Kallimadai near Singanallur. "He was working under Senthil Kumar, also an electrician from Veerappa Pillai Street at Irugur. Madan was in the habit of visiting Kumar's house often and became close friends with his son S Somnath, 24, a minibus conductor."
According to the officer, Madan was staying in Kumar's house for more than six months after the latter fell ill. "It was Madan who took care of Kumar."
He said Kumar's relatives on Saturday morning noticed that the main door of the house was not open even at 8am. "This was not usual. So, they knocked on the door. When there was no response, they opened the door and found Somnath dead in a pool of blood."
The relatives alerted the Singanallur police, who sent the body to the Govt Medical College and ESI Hospital at Varadharajapuram in the city for postmortem.
"When Madan visited the house around 8.30am, Kumar's relatives told us that he was staying with the father-son duo. We picked him up for questioning, during which he confessed to the crime. Madan, who was drunk, had an argument with Somnath on Friday night. In the heat of the moment, he dropped a boulder on Somnath's head, killing him on the spot. Later, Madan left the house," the officer said.
Madan was produced before a judicial magistrate and lodged in jail under judicial custody later in the day.
