Tirupur: A 54-year-old mentally challenged man bludgeoned his mother to death with a stone at his residence at Kaniyampoondi here on Saturday evening and committed suicide.
The Thirumuruganpoondi police identified the deceased duo as P Govindammal, 74, and her son P Shanmugasundaram, 54, of Thozhilar Nagar at Kaniyampoondi.
Police said Shanmugasundaram, a bachelor, was employed with a banian company a few years ago. "He became mentally challenged after his father's demise in 2018."
Around 5pm on Saturday, the officer said, Shanmugasundaram murdered his mother by hitting her on head with a stone and later hanged himself.
According to the officer, the incident came to light around 6pm, when one of the neighbours visited the house. When alerted, Thirumuruganpoondi police inspector V Jeganathan and team sent the bodies to the Govt Medical College and Hospital in Tirupur city. The bodies were handed over to the family members after the autopsy on Sunday afternoon.
The Thirumuruganpoondi police have registered a case and are inquiring into the incident.
