India vs Australia Prime Minister’s XI HIGHLIGHTS Day 2: India wins by 6 wickets; ends 46 overs at 257/5

Yeah, it was fantastic. We got we wanted out of this. A little unlucky that we could not get the full game. But we made the most of what we got. [On the fans in Canberra] It is fantastic. We love coming to Australia and playing in front of the fans here. It is always nice to see the fans coming and supporting us.

No Virat Kohli or Jasprit Bumrah in action who preferred to get some much-needed rest instead. India will be content with the set of players who got the chance to spend some time with the pink ball today. Harshit Rana got four wickets; Rahul, Jaiswal, Gill all spent useful minutes in the centre.

The focus now shifts to Adelaide, the venue for the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test.

Four singles off Renshaw’s over, the penultimate of the day.

Clayton to bowl the last over. Six runs from it including a boundary for Washington who ends unbeaten on 42 off 36 deliveries.

Jack Clayton for the first time. Washington ramp sweeps through fine leg for two runs. A single off an attempted slog sweep on the next. WICKET! Sarfaraz is strangled down leg.

Renshaw again. India gets to the target with 19 deliveries left in the game. INDIA WINS BY 6 WICKETS. 

But we continue on. Seven runs from the over.

Nisbet to Washington, FOUR, driven between covers and mid off. FOUR more! This time through mid wicket with a flick. FOUR, three in three. An edge through the gate between gully and third slip. A No Ball as well. Short and wide and Washington slashes at it, two runs. A single on the fourth delivery. A dot ball for Sarfaraz Khan.

Matt Renshaw to Ravindra Jadeja. The second delivery is driven to long off for one run. Washington square drives through point for another run. WICKET! Jadeja’s slog sweep is horribly miscued. A top edge and the ball goes high into the sky, Renshaw places himself under it and just about holds onto it.

Nisbet back into the attack. Another quick single stolen by the pair, Jadeja taps this to mid wicket and Washington is prompt in responding to his call.

O’Connor to Jadeja, an easy single to point. Washington clips from outside the off stump line through mid wicket for a single. FOUR! O’Connor tries a bouncer and Jadeja rocks back to pull this behind square. Jadeja taps towards mid on and charges down to the other end for a single.

Pope to Jadeja, ramp sweeps the first ball to fine leg for two. He cuts the third to deep point for a single. Washington clips to deep square leg for another single. One more single in the over for Jadeja makes it five runs from it. India just 32 runs away now.

O’Connor to Jadeja, FOUR. Starts with a short and wide delivery and Jadeja duly dispatches this through the vacant point region. FOUR! A glorious cover drive from Sundar. Nine runs from the over.

Pope again. Jadeja slogs through the on side, it’s not quite off the middle but it has enough on it to beat the deep mid wicket fielder. He is beaten outright on the very next delivery, looking for a slog sweep. A single for him on the last delivery. 

O’Connor again. Jadeja punches through point for a single. Washington gets an edge on the next delivery but it falls just short of gully. Just two runs from the over.

And there it is, Shubman Gill retires on 50 and in walks Washington Sundar.

OUT! Nitish is castled by Pope. Does not read the wrong one and has to walk back.

Ravindra Jadeja walks out to bat. Jadeja late cuts through third man to get three runs. Washington drives to long on for one run.

Aidan O’Connor to Nitish. SIX! Nitish gets it in the slot to free his levers and he hoists it over mid on. FOUR now! Clips it through mid wicket. Gill clips the fourth delivery through mid wicket and reaches his FIFTY. He gets there in just 62 balls. A single for Nitish to long on to end the over. 13 runs from it.

Pope to Gill, FOUR. There is a boundary rider at long off but he takes him on and heaves this over the fielder. Pope strays down leg and Gill wants to go at it with a sweep but misses. Cuts the fourth to deep cover for one. Nitish with a paddle shot as Pope strays down the leg once again, three runs. FOUR! Gill goes inside out over covers to move to 49.

It is of little consequence, but for those of you wondering, India needs another 89 runs from 16 overs.

Boland to Gill, clips it through square leg for two runs. Gill punches through cover for another run. Nitish goes for a half-jab at this hard length delivery, gets it to deep cover for a single. Gill pulls to deep mid wicket for another single.

Pope to Nitish, FOUR, slots it right back over the bowler’s head. FOUR again! This time Nitish sweeps it through mid wicket. A reverse sweep for FOUR, Nitish taking on the leg spinner.

Boland to Gill, sharp swing into the batter and he is struck on the pad. Appeals for leg before but this is clearly going down leg. Gill drives through covers for one run, its a No Ball as well which adds another extra to India’s tally.

Lloyd Pope with his leg spin now. FOUR! Gill charges down to attack, wants to get this over the bowler’s head but ends up placing it past mid wicket. Gill does for a slog sweep, fails to clear the rope and the ball digs into the ground as it lands, just one from that. Seven runs from the over. And it’s time for drinks.

Boland again to Gill. Too full from Boland and Gill middles his flick but mid on gets a hand to that which keeps the shot down to just two runs. Gill cuts the fifth to deep point for a single. Nitish drives through covers to end the over with two runs. 

Nitish punches through point to pick a single. Two for Gill with a jab through mid wicket. Jacobs bowls another No Ball. Gill slightly out of control on his pull shot but the ball lands well short of deep square leg, one run taken.

Boland back into the attack. Gill on strike. Five dot balls before Boland errs and bowls a No Ball. Gill slashes at the final delivery which runs between third slip and gully for FOUR.

Charlie Anderson gets Gill to edge one but it runs through the slips for FOUR.

Back to back No Balls from Jacobs as he tries to bowl bouncers. Nitish punches off the backfoot and collects a boundary past the gully region.

Hanno Jacobs continues. Gill pulls one to deep mid-wicket for four. Seven from the over

Charlie Anderson gets the big fish - Rohit is caught at slip for 3! Nitish Reddy is in next. Very good over. Just a couple of runs and a wicket off it.

KL Rahul has retired at 27. Rohit Sharma has replaced him at the crease. Some much-needed game-time for the skipper ahead of the second Test. Charlie Anderson is continuing. He bowls a maiden. Rohit still on 0.

Mahli Beardman continues. Gill is on strike. He is off the mark with a stylish backfoot punch in front of square on the off-side for four. Six runs from the over including a no-ball. 

Jaiswal pulls at a back-of-a-length delivery from Anderson, it should have been cut off at deep square but a misfield gets Jaiswal a FOUR. OUT! Another attempted heave from Jaiswal, gets a top edge and is caught at covers.

Beardman to Jaiswal. He delivers a peach to the left hander. Angles in and straightens a fraction to beat the outside edge. Jaiswal glances a delivery on his thigh pad to fine leg, one run. Another run for Rahul through mid off.

Jaiswal having some trouble with his back. The Indian physio is out on the park to tend to him. Looks okay to continue. He indeed is as he ramps Anderson over slips and picks a FOUR. It is a No Ball as well. Seven runs from that over.

Beardman to Rahul. , FOUR, that is as good a square drive you’ll ever see. Close to the body, under his head and in full control. FOUR through covers, hits it on the up. Rahul pushes the fifth through point with soft hands to run a quick single. FOUR! India pushing ahead rapidly now. Jaiswal smacks this back down the ground through mid off.

Charlie Anderson to Jaiswal, FOUR! Jaiswal pushes at this delivery outside off but does so with soft hands. The ball takes an edge and runs past third slip and all the way to the ropes. FOUR more! This time Jaiswal slashes hard and gets the ball to jump over the slips. A third FOUR in the over. Width on offer and Jaiswal accepts it with a crisp cut shot through cover-point.

Beardman again. A couple of bouncers in the over. While Rahul hooks it and picks a single, Jaiswal prefers to duck and let it run to the keeper. Beardman angles into the left handed Jaiswal, who tucks it away to fine leg for a single.

Boland again. Rahul picks a single through mid on. Another single to the mid on region for Jaiswal. Rahul clips the fifth off his pads but there is cover in the deep at square leg to stop that shot, gets him just one run.

Mahli Beardman into the attack now. Two singles and a leg bye from the over.

Nisbet bowls a maiden to Jaiswal who curbs his instinct to attack.

Boland to Rahul, FOUR! Sublime, in the radar and Rahul just leans on his front foot and drives this down the ground. Rahul flicks off his pads to fine leg for one. Jaiswal drives through covers for two runs.

Boland’s bid to get a streak of three maidens is spoiled as he oversteps. FOUR! Rahul chances upon a full delivery and drives it through covers.

FOUR! Jaiswal has a good, old fashioned swing at Nisbet’s first delivery. It takes a leading edge and goes over the slip cordon. FOUR more! Same approach, same result. A bouncer from Nisbet and Jaiswal ends up fending at it. 

Rahul continuing to defend his off stump. Does not go after anything wider from Boland. A short delivery in the over which Rahul tries to ramp over the keeper but misses.

A No Ball from Nisbet. Jaiswal comfortable in shouldering arms to deliveries outside the off stump line. The last delivery is slightly closer to the batter as it angles away. Jaiswal has a poke at it and is lucky to not get an edge.

Boland to Rahul, strays down the leg side twice in the over. Rahul firm in his defence except the last delivery which misses his outside edge by a whisker. A maiden over.

Jack Nisbet to bowl from the other end. Edged and FOUR! Jaiswal closes his bat face a fraction too early. The outside edge flies between gully and third slip to the fence. Jaiswal plays an on drive next to pick a single. Rahul off the mark with a single off his first delivery.

Scott Boland to start off for PM’s XI. Jaiswal on strike. 

A couple of play-and-miss from the left hander. A quick single to mid wicket off the last delivery. Just one run from the first over.

No Rohit Sharma. It will be Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to open the innings.

It was a one-man show for a major part of PM XI innings as Sam Konstas added to his stocks with a blistering hundred. But a middle order collapse meant the home side could never consolidate on his innings. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep were disciplined at the start but Konstas’ fireworks meant the Indian bowlers’ economy rate took a hit. But Harshit Rana still managed to get four and orchestrated the collapse. Washington and Jadeja bowled for a bit towards the end and wrapped up the tail.

Sundar to Jacobs, FOUR! Jacobs places this between mid wicket and long on. OUT! Jacobs looks for another slog but picks Jadeja inside the circle on the on side.

Jadeja to bowl again. Jacobs with a slog sweep to get a SIX! Pope looks to slog through the on side but picks Washington Sundar at short mid wicket.

Jadeja to Pope, appeals for lbw. This one skids on but was going down leg. A single to square leg on the second. Jacobs with a ramp sweep to run three.

Washington again. Three singles from the over.

Four singles in this Ravindra Jadeja over. There was a half run out chance too as Jacobs tried to steal a second run. But it was Jadeja chasing the delivery and Lloyd Pope asked his partner to return from half way.

Akash for his 10th over. OUT! Konstas’ innings comes to an end. Akash induces his top edge and Navdeep Saini grabs the chance at deep mid wicket.

Jadeja to bowl. Another chance as Jacobs mistimes another slog. The ball lands just beyond Jaiswal who is running behind from mid on. Two runs for Konstas through square leg. Another over that yields seven runs for the PM XI.

Akash tries a bouncer to Jacobs, whose pull shot takes a top edge and flies over the keeper for FOUR! Seven runs from the over, there’s half a chance on the final delivery as Jacobs miscues a heave but the ball hits the deck and beats the mid off fielder.

Another change in bowling. We have Ravindra Jadeja to bowl first time Down Under this summer. Width on offer and Konstas cuts to pick three runs. HUNDRED FOR KONSTAS! He scampers through for a single off the final delivery to get to his milestone off just 90 balls.

Akash Deep returns for a second spell. FOUR! Jacobs waits for the delivery to come onto him before chipping it over mid off. Seven runs from that over.

Washington to Sundar, tucks this delivery from around the wicket to fine leg for a single. Jacobs drives to long off for another run. Too full from Washington, allowing an easy drive to Konstas for a single. Jacobs again picks a single to long off. The fifth single of the over to Konstas through mid wicket.

Konstas picks another boundary off this Reddy over. Not quite short but he pulls it nonetheless and threads it between square leg and fine leg. He moves into the 90s with that. Five runs from the over.

Washington again. Five runs from his over.

Reddy to continue. Three runs for Jacobs over mid off. Konstas picks out the yorker and taps it through long on for a single.

Washington to Konstas, three runs as the batter lofts the first one over mid off. SIX! Jacobs takes on the spinner, picks this delivery over the long on boundary. Jacobs gets a single to mid off to keep the strike.

Another change in bowling. Nitish Kumar Reddy to bowl. Konstas now farming the strike. He picks a single off the fourth to long on.

Spin for the first time today. Washington Sundar to bowl. FYI, it is Sarfaraz Khan who has taken the wicketkeeping duties now.

Sam Konstas punches the first delivery to long on. That’s the only run from the over. 

Prasidh to Konstas, one run through to deep point. Prasidh gets his first wicket. O’Connor slices straight to the point fielder. Australia is falling like nine pins here.

WICKET! Harshit gets a delivery to move back in sharply and castles Clayton. He was just hit for a boundary through backward point on the previous delivery. That’s end of the partnership.

A 100 partnership between Sam Konstas and Jack Clayton. Prasidh manages to avoid a boundary in this over but still gives away seven runs.

Harshit to Clayton, one run with a slice past gully. FOUR! Konstas swats this down the ground. A single to end the over.

FOUR! Prasidh puts in extra bounce on the first delivery and Clayton uses it and lofts it over the slips. FOUR again! This time Clayton pulls through fine leg. He gets a single through covers on the fourth. FOUR! Another reverse ramp from Konstas. The PM’s XI is on a rampage.

Harshit to continue. This one stays low and Clayton just about gets bat onto it. He nearly chops the third delivery back onto his stumps, gets a single. FOUR! In the slot and Konstas heaves this across the line for FOUR! Another FOUR! He clears his front leg and pummels this through mid wicket. Two runs to finish the over.

Prasidh to Clayton. Keeps it in the fourth-stump channel to test the outside edge. Tucks the fifth delivery to fine leg for one run.

Harshit to Konstas. The onslaught continues. Harshit goes for a bouncer and Konstas pulls it behind square and between the two fielders at fine leg and backward square leg. SIX now! That’s 50 for Konstas off 49 balls. Another bouncer which is smoked over behind square.

Prasidh Krishna replaces Akash Deep. SHOT! Konstas slog sweeps the third delivery over mid wicket for FOUR. Another four, this one comes off an inside edge. That is also the 50-runn partnership between the pair. He finishes the over with a single.

A change in bowling as Harshit Rana comes on to bowl. FOUR! Clayton sends a delivery going down leg to the fine leg fence. FOUR! The second boundary comes with a crisp pull shot.

Akash to Konstas, a reverse ramp shot over the slip cordon for FOUR! Talk about innovation. He follows that up with a textbook on drive to picks three runs. Clayton pokes the next through covers with soft hands and gets a run. Another overstepping from Akash.

Siraj tries a bounce to Konstas who pulls it to deep square for one. India is convinced Clayton is caught behind but the umpire denies the appeal. It was down the leg and looked like it hit the thigh pad.

FOUR! Konstas looks to heave Akash through the on side, gets an inside edge to the fine leg fence. A single on the second delivery through mid wicket. Akash goes short and Clayton swats it down mid on for FOUR!

Siraj to Konstas, FOUR! A step down the wicket and Konstas drives it through mid off. FOUR more. This is slightly shorter and Konstas lets the ball rise onto him before slashing it through point.

Akash to bowl his fifth. Clayton firm in his defence. He pounces on a full delivery, drives it through cover and picks two runs.

Another tight over from Siraj. A single each to Clayton and Konstas in that one. 

Akash Deep to continue. Beats the outside edge of Clayton twice in the over. Another No Ball from Akash. A single through point for Clayton to get off the mark. A single to finish te over.

Siraj to Konstas. A maiden over. The last delivery stays low and thuds into the pad but Konstas gets a faint inside edge which saves him. The stump mic catches an Indian player say that it was pad first and the replay suggests the same.

FOUR! Too full from Akash Deep and Konstas punches it down the ground. Konstas gets a single through fine leg.

RAIN! And we have the heavens open up again. The umpires call for the covers.

Akash Deep resumes with a No Ball. But he follows it up with a WICKET. Goodwin is gone! He expects the ball to come back in but it goes straight, thus not getting inside the line. A faint edge to the keeper.

Siraj to Renshaw. WICKET! Siraj continues to probe in that fourth-stump channel. He pokes at one such delivery and the edge carries to Devdutt Padikkal at second slip.

FOUR! Jaden Goodwin slashes at his first delivery and sees the ball rush past the slip cordon.

Another appeal from India as Renshaw is struck on the pad from Akash Deep. Denied by the umpire. A play-and-miss on the third delivery. Three runs, on the pads and Renshaw dispatches it away past mid on. FOUR! First one of the day as Konstas tucks the last ball through mid wicket.

Siraj again to Renshaw. The second delivery is down the leg and Renshaw fails to clip it away. A quick single on the fourth with a soft push through covers. A bit of swing on the final two deliveries.

Akash Deep from the other end. In the slot to Konstas, who drives and picks another single. Renshaw defends the second. Off the mark with an inside edge through square leg. Huge appeals for lbw as Akash gets this to nip in to Konstas. Akash oversteps on the next.

Mohammed Siraj with the new ball. Konstas will be on strike. Three slips and a gully in place.

A full toss to start off, Konstas drives through cover and runs one. A little too far wide from Siraj, Renshaw happy to shoulder arms. Renshaw shuffles across and flicks, fielded by mid wicket.

And the Indian team makes its way to the square with Rohit Sharma back at the helm.

Both teams will bat 50 overs each. Unlike an ODI, there is no restriction on the number of overs one bowler can bowl. There will be a 30-minute break between the two essays.

After inclement weather forced play to be abandoned on the first day, we have positive signs on the second. While there were showers earlier in the day, the weather looks clear for now and we’re set for a start.
