Coimbatore: A postgraduate medical student of Govt Medical College near Hope College on Avinashi Road here was arrested on Saturday for planting a pen camera in a toilet at the administrative block of the govt hospital in Pollachi, where he has been getting training for the past 15 days.
The Pollachi East police identified the arrested person as Venkatesh, 33, a native of Panamarathupatti village near Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district.
An investigation officer said Venkatesh was a final-year MS (ortho) student of the Govt Medical College in Coimbatore city. "He was getting training in the Govt hospital in Pollachi. Trainee nursing students on Thursday spotted a pen camera wrapped in a toilet cleaning brush with a rubber band at a toilet at the administrative block of the hospital. They immediately informed the hospital superintendent, Dr E Raja. Resident medical officer Marimuthu and Dr Venkatesh, who was on duty at the administrative block, subsequently went to check the pen camera."
The hospital superintendent lodged a complaint with the Pollachi East police, who registered a case. "Preliminary investigation revealed that Dr Venkatesh had removed the memory card from the pen camera when he went to check the same after the nursing students spotted it. During questioning, he confessed to the crime," the officer said.
Based on the confessional statement, police arrested Dr Venkatesh on Saturday. The officer said it was through Amazon that Dr Venkatesh bought the pen camera. "We have collected the purchase details and seized the memory card and a mobile phone from him. He was produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody in the evening."
