T'puram: Even as differences are being reported from more area committee meetings of the CPM, party state secretary M V Govindan said there would be no compromise on the wrong practices and added that strict action would be taken against those indulging in anti-party activities. Govindan dismissed the recent factionalism-related incidents at Karunagapally as isolated and said they would not be a setback to the party, but it is learned that the CPM would proceed with disciplinary actions after the district conferences get over.
The recent election process at the local conference in Kulashekarapuram North under Karunagapally culminated in a physical fight and detention of state committee members K Rajagopal and K Somaprasad. On Friday, scores of party workers had protested against the election of local committee secretaries. Protesters, including several women, displayed ‘Save CPM' placards as they demonstrated in front of the venue of the Karunagappally area committee meeting and issued public statements in front of the media.
After factionalism spilled onto the streets, CPM Kollam district secretariat meeting, attended by Govindan, on Saturday disbanded the Karunagappally area committee, which had become the epicentre of dissident activities. Instead of an elected committee, a seven-member ad-hoc committee has been given charge of the Karunagappally area committee. All seven local committees under the area committee will be excluded from party conferences.
The party state brass is learned to have asked the ad-hoc committee to submit a report based on which disciplinary actions will be decided. The state brass is also trying to prevent this internal bickering from reaching the district level since such unrest at the district conferences will bring more damage to the party.
"What happened at Karunagapally cannot be termed factionalism. It was just some local issues," said Govindan. The party is well-equipped and strong enough to resolve the issues. If any such issues are reported in any of the area committee meetings, then they should be seen as local issues, not as factionalism, he said.
