Rourkela: A 28-year-old man was arrested in Sundargarh district on Sunday for allegedly killing his wife on Friday and trying to stage it as a suicide.
Police said the accused, Jogeswar Oram, who was employed as a sintering worker in Kolkata, returned home at Golabaru village 15 days ago. After returning, he often consumed liquor and came home in an inebriated condition. When his wife, Binita, opposed him, he abused her.
Around 6 pm on Friday, Jogeswar again came home drunk. When Binita opposed him, Jogeswar started beating her and then brought a stick and rained blows on her.
When Binita fell down unconscious, Jogeswar took her to a room and hanged her with a sari. After some time, he brought her down, called the neighbours, cried in front of them, and claimed Binita had hanged herself. In the meantime, Binita's brother, Binod, also arrived.
They took her to Hatibari community health centre (CHC), where the doctor declared her brought dead. Around 8 pm, Jogeswar reached Hatibari police station and lodged an FIR, claiming Binita died by suicide due to his liquor consumption.
On Saturday, police found injury marks on Binita's body and suspected she was killed. A forensic team arrived at the spot, and after an inquest and post-mortem, her body was handed over to her brother.
Later, Binod lodged an FIR at Hatibari police station alleging his sister was killed by her husband. Hatibari police registered a murder case and started investigating. On Sunday, Hatibari police detained Jogeswar and he confessed to his crime after interrogation.
