Kanpur: As part of the ‘Road Safety Month November 2024', inmates of Fatehgarh district jail crafted road safety reflector collar bands for cows using discarded, tattered plastic sacks from prison provisions.
The aim behind the bands was to address the concern that approximately 25% of road accidents occur due to cows resting on roads, culminating in collisions. These occurrences not only cause casualties and damage to property. but also inflict harm upon the cows, occasionally proving fatal.
Jail superintendent Bhimsen Mukund said, "These bands were affixed on cows on Friday as a modest advancement.". He elaborated that the reflector collar bands illuminate when vehicle headlights beam upon them, rendering the cows visible from afar.
"This visibility shall alert motorists to the presence of animals ahead, even during night," he further said.
