Bhubaneswar: A POCSO court in Sambalpur district on Saturday awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to a 62-year-old man for impregnating a minor girl.
The 15-year-old girl was raped while herding goats in a field where the accused was also present to herd his goats in June 2022. After the incident, he forcibly kept a physical relationship with the girl on a regular basis. The accused threatened her not to share this with anyone. After nine months the girl had an ache and her mother took her to VSS Institute of Medical Science and Research. The doctors in VIMSAR informed her she is pregnant. She gave birth to a baby boy on the same day at the hospital.
Subsequently, when the mother of the girl asked her about it, she shared her ordeal. On 23 May 2023, the mother of the girl filed a complaint. The POCSO court on Saturday sentenced the accused man to 20 years of RI and levied a fine of Rs. 1,00,000 under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and a 7-year RI with a fine of Rs 50,000 under 506(2) section of IPC. The judgement was delivered by Special Judge (POCSO) Abhilash Senapati after recording the testimonies of 25 witnesses. The case was represented by special public prosecutor Santosh Panda.
