Aizawl: With Mizoram Police launching a ‘no tolerance drive' for vehicles plying without fitness certificates in the capital Aizawl city from Dec 9, long queues of vehicles were seen in locations where Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) can be obtained even disrupting vehicular traffic flow in the city.
Police officers said the drive is being launched to ensure people's safety on the roads during Christmas and New Year.
There are four booths run by the state pollution control board within Aizawl city limits with the busiest being near the Secretariat in Khatla area and all of them are overcrowded since fag-end of November. Large trucks have to pay Rs 200 for obtaining PUCC while the rate is Rs 150 and Rs 120 for diesel and petrol LMVs respectively, Rs 80 for auto-rickshaws and Rs 60 for two-wheelers for a perios of six months.
Police are checking vehicles on the main road and those driving without valid driving licence, insurance, PUCC and for commercial vehicles without fitness certificate are being fined on the spot.
Meanwhile, pressure has also been mounting from the public to set up more PUCC booths to ease the problems being faced by vehicle owners and drivers due to the presence of only four booths.
