Silchar: Brown sugar valued at around Rs 1 crore was seized from a car and a suspected drug peddler was arrested near Nilambazar in Sribhumi district on Friday.
Sources said a team of policemen, led by Nilambazar OC Joychandra Sinha, acting on a tip-off, laid a trap on the Nilambazar-Fakirabazar PWD road on Friday morning and stopped a car travelling towards Nilambazar. The police searched the car and recovered 560.57 grams of brown sugar concealed in five soap cases. The car driver, identified as Ali Hussain (25), who is a resident of Keotkuna GP, was held in this connection, sources said.
The car was also seized and a case under relevant sections of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against Hussain. Further legal procedure is being taken regarding the matter. The price of the seized drugs in the international black market is around Rs 1 crore, the sources said.
Joychandra Sinha told the media that initial investigation revealed that the arrested man, Ali Hussain, collected the seized drugs from Mizoram and was about to smuggle the same into Nilambazar and other parts of the district. Police has received information about the smuggling of drugs and a probe is underway to dismantle the network running the illegal activities, Sinha said.
