Mumbai, 28th November 2024: The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), a flagship initiative of the Government of India, is set to revolutionize freight transportation by establishing a high-speed, high-capacity rail network exclusively for goods movement. This ambitious project aims to decongest existing rail and road networks, reduce logistics costs, and enhance India’s trade competitiveness while supporting sustainable economic growth.
The JNPT-Vaitarna section is strategically important as it connects Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), one of India’s largest container ports, with the rest of the WDFC network. This section is crucial for ensuring seamless freight transportation to and from the port, thereby strengthening the “Make in India” initiative through improved supply chain efficiency.
To ensure the timely completion of this vital segment, Shri Praveen Kumar, Managing Director of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCIL), conducted a comprehensive inspection of the JNPT-Vaitarna section on November 22, 2024. He was accompanied by senior officials from DFCCIL, consultants, and representatives from TATA Projects.
The JNPT-Vaitarna section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor spans 103 kilometers, connecting Kharbao and Taloja to JNPT. This segment includes 53 major bridges, 242 minor bridges, 3 yard/station buildings, and 1.17 kilometers of tunnels. It also features 239 track kilometers. The construction of 10 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and 9 Road Under Bridges (RUBs) will eliminate 20 level crossings, significantly enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
Inauguration of Progress Monitoring Cell at Taloja
To enhance project management, Shri Kumar inaugurated a dedicated Progress Monitoring Cell at Taloja. This facility will enable real-time tracking of work progress and ensure swift resolution of issues.
Key Highlights of the Inspection
Review of JNPT Yard and Station Building
The inspection began with a detailed assessment of the JNPT Yard, station building, and stone column works. Shri Kumar emphasized the importance of adhering to project timelines to meet the December 2025 deadline.
Inspection of Key Locations
• Gawan Phata and Vahale Dhumale: Progress at these critical points was reviewed to ensure smooth integration within the overall project.
• 4th Tunnel at Kundevahal: Shri Kumar inspected the tunnel’s progress, emphasizing the need for high-quality and timely execution.
Track Work Inspection
Using a Utility Track Vehicle (UTV), Shri Kumar inspected approximately 10 kilometers of track work between Navade Road and Nilje, focusing on track alignment and operational readiness.
During the inspection, Shri Kumar reiterated the importance of completing the JNPT-Vaitarna section on schedule, highlighting its integral role in the larger WDFC vision. He urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts, maintain strong collaboration, and ensure high standards of quality throughout the execution process.
The completion of this segment in Maharashtra will not only transform freight transportation but also significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to India’s economic growth.
