Most of the readers would be aware of the concept of BYOB (Bring Your Own) and the last 'B' could be anything subjective, depending on the occassion (Box, Bottle, Bounty). However, a recent response by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, would prompt many train travellers to adopt another BYOB concept, which is Bring Your Own Blankets!

Minister Vaishnaw told Parliament recently that the blankets provided to train passengers during their journeys are washed at least "once in a month."

The Union Minister's response in the Lok Sabha came after Congress MP from Ganganagar, Rajasthan, Kuldeep Indora asked whether "woolen blankets are washed only once a month while passengers are paying for bedding that meets the basic hygiene standards".

Vaishnaw further said that passengers were also provided an additional bed sheet in the bedroll kit to use as a quilt cover.

He went on to highlight that the blankets used in Indian Railways, as per current specifications, are "lighter, easy to wash and provide good insulation to passengers for overall comfortable journey experience”.

Further, Vaishnaw highlighted several other measures being taken by Railways to ensure passenger comfort and safety. Among these are the procurement of new linen sets with improved BIS specifications to ensure better quality as well as mechanised laundries to ensure the supply of hygienic linen sets, as per a PTI report.

The linen provided to the train passengers is washed in mechanised laundries or washing facilities after every single use, the minister said.

"Monitoring of linen washing activities in the laundry premises is done by CCTVs and Railway staff," Vaishnaw said, noting that white-meters are used for checking the quality of washed linen items.

The coral life of linen items was reduced from the previously prescribed duration as it allows quicker induction of fresh linen items.

Vaishnaw said war rooms have been established at zonal headquarters as well as divisional levels. This has been done to monitor/prompt action on complaints that are lodged by people on the RailMadad portal, including complaints regarding linen/bedroll.

Along with the eco-friendly packaging of bedrolls, several improved logistics are used to store, transport as well as load and unload linen / bedrolls at railway stations and on trains as well.
