Rahul Mamkootathil and U R Pradeep will be sworn in as MLAs on December 4th after winning the Palakkad and Chelakkara bypolls, respectively. Mamkootathil secured his first assembly seat, while Pradeep returns for a second term. The byelections were necessitated by the resignations of Shafi Parambil and K Radhakrishnan following their Lok Sabha victories.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rahul Mamkootathil and U R Pradeep, who were elected from the Palakkad and Chelakkara assembly constituencies in the bypoll, will be sworn in as MLAs on December 4.
The decision was taken by the assembly secretariat. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Sankaranarayanan Thampi lounge at 12 noon.
This is the first time Rahul Mamkootathil is elected to the state assembly. He won the Palakkad seat by a margin of 18,724 votes, defeating P Sarin of the LDF. However, for U R Pradeep, this is the second stint as an MLA in the assembly. He earlier represented the Chelakkara constituency during the period from 2016 to 2021. He won the Chelakkara bypoll by a margin of 12,122 votes, defeating Remya Haridas of the Congress.
The strength of the MLAs of both fronts will remain unchanged even though the new MLAs are being sworn in. This is because the Palakkad seat was represented by the UDF and Chelakkara by the LDF earlier too.
The bypoll was conducted in these constituencies due to the resignation of Shafi Parambil (Cong), who represented Palakkad, and K Radhakrishnan (CPM), who represented Chelakkara. Both these leaders resigned since they were elected to the Lok Sabha.
